Circul8 for Learning
Circul8 for Learning combines project-based education with an chance for everyone in the school community to collaborate on a lively, enjoyable fund-raising event. I teach participants to perform dances using a range of movement patterns, and have created a rich, experiential package which has the potential to develop teamwork, leadership, expression and creativity.
"Sian is a brilliant teacher and great at breaking the steps down into small simple chunks, the dancing itself is super fun and to a wide mix of upbeat tunes. I love it!" - Bethany, Norwich
History
Beginning with initial teacher training in 2011, I have significant experience with young people in schools. Taking the opportunity during my first student placement to devise and deliver a cross-curricular week-long programme around my class’s topic, “Celts and Romans”, I was struck by the success of the "Celtic style feast" (which featured high-energy circle dancing as its main activity) - especially when a pupil reported having replicated the activity for her birthday party over the weekend. I have subsequently spent time both as a volunteer and as a classroom teacher, and am now an ardent advocate for the provision of community arts for young people.

How it works
Motivation and confidence are the guiding principles at the heart of Circul8 for Learning. Over the course of the half term, I support pupils in mastering the dances through use of group work, pair work and opportunities for independent practice guided by self-evaluation. Each class concludes with a whole class practice run, giving pupils a chance to celebrate what they have achieved. The ideal length of a session is between 45 and 90 minutes, which can be scheduled to suit your school’s PPA timetable. As the focal point of the half term’s work, pupils have the chance to show their families how it’s done at a barn dance-style fund-raising event, which I coordinate and "call".
